Brilliant Pebbles
Drawing inspiration from influential groups like Avalanches, Plump DJs, and soundtracks to Chuck Norris films - Brilliant Pebbles builds up an excitement to dance, while still retaining a ‘tech-wiz’ kinda feel. The visuals, taken from the infamous US military documentary, SDI Wars, give the overall feel of ‘oldskool’ technological nostalgia, while the music is a constant of loudness and electronic insanity.
If you are wondering what exactly a “brilliant pebble” could possibly be, check out a screen grab below from the original SDI Star Wars documentary.
This is a bit of a tip to Korg Zero8 users out there - don’t bother trying to patch an external harddrive thru the mixer, to your platform (in my case its to a new MacBook Pro 2.66).
Turns out, Korg Mixers do NOT like having a secondary data source being connected, while active in production - it took me ages to work it out, but the confusion ended with my touchscreen complete bamboozled, and off calibration (no Y-axis).
So I thought I’d just note this down - in case anyone finds this interesting.
Hi! Hello! Konichiwa! G’day! Whatever hello is in Russian!
It’s been quiet around these parts for too long, my friends - and for that I apologize. I guess I can’t leave it up to Alex to do ALL of the work on the website - seriously, you should see some of his saved drafts for the future: mostly about how cool he thinks TIGA is not, and why everyone should dress up like Eiffel65 (pictured right). It’s TRUE! Believe me! Alex wants to be Eiffel65!!!!
So the reason for my absense has been a tale of woe - as my Macbook Pro (2006 model), decided to finally give up the ghost, in early July. CO-IN-CI-DENTALLY, only just after my extended warranty had expired. So when I had taken it to Mac1, they informed me that the ‘Logice Board’ was crapola, and it would cost me $2300 to replace!
I still to this day don’t know (and don’t really care) what the f### a ‘logic board’ is - but I sure wasn’t going to bother working that out, and instead bought a new Macbook Pro 2.66ghz 15Inch.
Here’s a hilarious review (which is obviously a little old, now), by techy Lou Fernandez:
So, yes - the Macbook Pro is a great piece of performance machinery - but I too had some small gripes about the way the 15-inch has been meddled with in at design.
They could have at least kept one of the USB ports on the right hand side of the laptop - so that those who are right handed, don’t have to have a cable go around the back of the laptop (and get caught), to connect their mouse into.
FIREWIRE 400!!!! My Zero8 mixer is 400! And for some reason, I asked around most of the major mac related stores in Brisbane, and no-one could supply me with a 800 to 400 cable locally. I ended up having to order one, which I’m now waiting for!! Grrrrr!!
On that note, I just want to point out how cool I think LaCie are for creating ‘flat cables’:
Alex says: you see the bigger 64 key one?
Alex says: er 192 actually
Adam says: hrmmm..
Adam says: yeah
Adam says: do the buttons even light up?
Alex says: it would appear not
Adam says: gay
Alex says: haha
Alex says: ah money mark has one. . .heh
Alex says: damn thing is as big as him
Adam says: oh well that makes it even more gay
Alex says: yeeeeeeeeeeeeees
Last month or so Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, and David Lynch (the crazy, meditation guy who also happens to write and direct surreal movies) released an interestingly moody music project called “Dark Night of the Soul“. . .well sorta. As the story goes Danger Mouse’s contract with EMI kept him from releasing the album for sale LEGALLY but doesn’t forbid releasing a blank CD-R and Lynch’s companion art book full of his subjective photography (supposedly, which visually tells the story behind the music) and hinting that he doesn’t mind if people share the mp3s that are currently available on the net thanks to NPR. Limited to about 5000 copies at $50 a piece, the photography book sold out fast but they now have a nice unnumbered hardback edition over at Amazon for a tad cheaper.
While a few of the tracks are over-produced in my opinion (gotta know when to pull back so it doesn’t sound like an earful of fuzz) and others are just annoying (the Black Francis and Iggy Pop tracks come to mind), there are several standout tracks like “Star Eyes (I Can’t Catch It)” which is a dreamy and moving journey and my personal favorite on the album (David Lynch is credited as the vocalist, even). Saying that, it’s hard to be overly critical when it comes to free music (a little over 45 minutes worth total). So, go figure out how to download from NPR’s site and enjoy!
Now, about the album title, is it a reference to the writings from Saint John of the Cross or to Bill Murray quoting F. Scott Fitzgerald in “Groundhog Day?”
The Icelandic group Amiina has just released their new three track EP titled “Re Minore.” You can check out their myspace page to listen to one of the track from it as well as their previous material. It’s a limited pressing so I’m hoping to snag a copy before they run out. They are engaged in a small tour over in Europe but let’s hope they come to the States when they have a proper full length album to promote.
I first learned about Amiina back in 2007 or so and fell in love with their soft and dreamy melodies. I’ve always wanted to do a cover version of “Seoul” as I love their use of tuned saws. I might actually make Adam help me with a cover. Yeah, he’ll do it!
I wish I knew about these gals when they were touring out here! I kick myself for not discovering them sooner. I love their use of little bells and chimes!
It’s back to The Independent to see Tiga perform! Booka Shade was a great show as was RJDJ years back. The venue, while hard to find parking, is fairly decent and the staff is usually courteous so this can’t be so bad a night, eh? Oh how wrong I was!
Rarely do I get to a show purposely before the headlining act goes on stage. I have only been to a few shows where the preshow acts are decent. When I do accidently catch one and it’s great, I’m always amazed. The Tiga show at The Independent was one of the worst I have had the pleasure of witnessing. We head in around 10pm and “DJ Omar” is finishing up his set of mediocre remixes of decent mainstream tracks and by 10:30 or so (and I only put the myspace link up for posterity but I do not suggest clicking it) Jaimie Fanatic prances up to the center stage with his Macbook to let us listen to some of his new beats. This guy (”Jamie Fantastic” as I mistakingly refered to him as) worked the knobs in a most enthusiastic fashion (including the crowd-pumping favorites Tomahawk Chop, Lasso Whirl, and Resuscitation Press) but only ear-splitting laser noises came out of the speakers. Truly, this was the single worst thing I have ever heard (and I listened to that terrible Animal Collective ”Animal Crack Box” album). I’d hate to even try to pinpoint the worst part of his act but it was probably the Rage Against the Machine forced audience participation remix. At one point, people were just booing in an effort to get him to stop his set and leave.
Finally around 11:45 Tiga starts to set up. It only takes a few minutes as he’s only there to “spin” it seems. $18 and I can hear him spin some dated 90’s progressive jungle house nonsense? 10 minutes into his set and he takes off his jacket to reveal some free ad space on his chest promoting his own album. Bravo, sir. 30 minutes into his set we decide to leave. I was a bit upset that I couldn’t bring my camera to the show as it was deemed “too professional” by the ticketers but in the end, I missed nothing. Here’s a G1 Phone pic of Tiga doing something.
”Why did you even go?” you ask? Well, Tiga’s last album ”Sexor” was actually pretty cool and the new one “Ciao!” has some great sounds going on. Not only that, but Tiga, himself, is actually a pretty amusing guy. Here, check out this “interview” he did. It’s full of scripted douchebaggery as he makes himself out to be Canada’s best export.
I missed Passion Pit last Tuesday but made it to this? Pfft. . .my priorities are all mixed up. Do yourself a favor and snag their latest album “Manners.” It expands their “Chunk of Change” EP with more feel good music (even if you think Michael Angelakos’ voice is abrasive).
